What do I need to look for when purchasing a handheld GPS? I have never used one and don't know what to look for.

There are several levels of funtions with GPS units from simple GPS position data up to full plotter with mapping (chartplotter).

 

For fishing, devices that are a Chartplotter are the most useful.

 

Actually a smartphone is more useful with a map app like Navionics.
