price per worm?

Featured Replies

i know this is going to vary a lot based on sources and quantity bought as well as style of bait made but i am curious if anyone knows about how much $$ worth of product goes into making each worm.  perhaps a 5 inch senko with one color of flake (not that it makes much difference)

disregard things like molds and the one time purchase stuff.  just things like plastisol, glitter and worm oil and salt.

i know this is a weird question but it seems like some of you serious pourers may have figured it out.

I think I have it down to between 25-30cents a worm.  It gets cheaper as you buy plastisol, softner, salt, etc in bulk

I'll try to break down a hand poured Senko's price for you.  Let's assume you bought a 5 gallon bucket of plastol for $125 shipped  ($25/Gallon). You also bought a gallon of Salt for $4, and a gallon of softener for $30.  Let's also say you use the normal senko formula of  4 oz. plastic - 2 oz. Salt - 1 oz Softener.

You can roughly make a little over 400 senkos per gallon of plastic.  So we'll say you only used one gallon of your original 5 gallon bucket in this scenerio.

Gallon of Plastic - $25

1/2 Gallon of Salt - $2

1 Quart of Softener - $7.50

we'll say 4 oz. of Colorant - $6

and we'll guess 4 oz. of Glitter - $6

That's a total of $46.50.  So we'll divide $46.50 by the 400 sticks that you made, which equals a total of $.12 per stick!

You costs greatly go down based on how much material you buy, especially plastol.  Most of the time a gallon of plastol alone costs $40, plus shipping.  But you can buy a 5 gallon bucket of plastic for $100, plus usually $25 shipping.  So that's $40 a gallon vs. $25 a gallon, which is a huge difference really.

thanks guys,

saving money wasnt at all why i got into hand pours but it never hurts.  really, it seems that if your buying yamamoto plastics your saving quite a bit but if you are buying anything else your savings are more marginal.  like i said that is a very small consideration for me (not becuase i have money, because i dont, but just because of the time involved i dont think  that it would be worth it just to save money)

very interesting,

I agree, if you are pouring your own plastics just 'to save money', then you are to cheap!!!  :)  I enjoy doing it as a hobby, IT'S FUN, almost as enjoyable as fishing!  You can also come out with tons of different color schemes and do different layers of colors.  I really see no downside of pouring my baits.  Starting next spring I'm planning on opening up an online store to sell products, not so much for the money, but because it's something I love doing.

Tw, you forgot to add in what your time is worth......if these are for selling.
