Rod Modifications

Featured Replies

I recently purchased an older 6' 10 " all star pro

series rod for worms and jigs, but the handle is

longer than my flipping rod.  What would I have to do

to remove the cork and reel seat, then do a split grip

like the ones in the picture below on the right

side?(Boil in water)  Also, in its stock form, the

reel does not have a blank through reel seat.  I have

ordered a new reel seat, but I am looking at a

supplier for the split grips.  I also have not decided

on the foregrip,  I might build an "epoxy ramp"

Any Ideas

hotwheels,

Because you want to take the reel seat off, you are first going to have to cut all of the rear and fore grip off. Use an adjustable utility knife and set the blade as small as possible at first then progressively go deeper until you can get a slot style screwdriver in the slit and twist it to break the cork off of the blank.

Be real careful not to cut into the blank.

Once you have all of the cork off, then you will need something that you can lay the rod horizontally in and be able to submerge the reel seat in hot water (about 250° F any temps at or above 300° F will turn the blank to mush). Lay the reel seat in the hot water for about 10 min and then try to twist it, if it will not move then repeat the process until you can twist it and break it lose.

If this procedure doesn't work then you will need to use a dremel and cutoff wheel to cut horizontally the length of the seat being careful not to cut the blank until you can place the blade of your screwdriver in it and break it lose.

I told you it wasn't going to be easy, and if you cut the blank in either procedure you might as well toss the rod in the trash.

When you have the grips and seat off let us know and we will go from their. If you decide that is to much work there is a few of us here that can guide you through splitting the existing grips, leaving the original seat...

Good Luck...
