A recomendation on components

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about having a friend build a rod for me. I was planing on a 6'6" mh, fast or medium fast (baitcasting)StCroix Legend blank.I spose I could just get all the same components that come on a store bought StCroix but I could just buy the rod built and save money..what would you choose for guides ,reel seat,handles,etc..The guy does a nice job on the wraps with nice patterns.I,ve seen some of his work. I dont want to go over board just something a little differant.

telecaster,

Your builder should be able to recommend different tricks of the trade to offer you something that will not be on a factory rack rod. If you have the time I invite you to take a look at my website for my rods and see what all can be done, I think it will help you help him to build you the rod you really want....Click my DG Rod Works tag

Good Luck..

Thanks, good info.I dont know why I didnt click yuor link before 8-)..One quick question,Is the split grip done primarily for weight reduction and or balancing? Buy the way the flaming looks super :D

telecaster,

One quick question,Is the split grip done primarily for weight reduction and or balancing?
A little of both. The split does cut down on weight but it is minimal. The ability to split the grip allows for more adjustment in the positioning of the reel seat (helps in the balance point). On most custom rods you will see a difference in the split spacing between different rod/reel combos because of the final adjustment for seat positioning (again the balance point). Most of the balance comes from the reduction of weight that is placed on the tip area. When I build I use the smallest and lightest guides in the tip area as possible (depending on the guide layout, style, and line size).

Not so in a factory rack rod with a split grip all of the same models will have the same spacing, they use it as a slight weight reduction and cool look for sales hype.

Hope this didn't confuse you.

Good Luck..
