Action For Trout

Featured Replies

I am going to be fishing for stream trout. I am thinking about getting a 5 foot UL rod. Should i have a fast action for the big ones or moderate so I don't rip the hook out of the smaller guys. I am planning on meeting in the middle with a Moderate fast action rod but im curious if it lacks the backbone to set the hook on a big one.

Depends on what hooks and line you use

I fished for trout last weekend with a medium/fast. Worked well. I personally don't like UL rods. I just set my drag up pretty light to provide the give needed to keep from ripping the lure out of the fishes mouth.

I normally don't fish for trout so I used my finesse rig spooled with 30lb powerpro and a 12lb fluoro leader and out fished my buddy using 4lb mono. So much for trout being line shy. I guess fluorcarbon really is super clear or they were just really on that day.

I'd opt for a lighter (softer) UL action 7' - 8' rod myself. That combined with an UL reel and 2# test Trilene XL and you're good to go. You could step it up to 4# test, but I'd put an additional 5' section of fluorocarbon for a leader. Trout can be pretty persnickety at times! I've caught a lot of trout with a rig like this.

How about just using flouro in the spool?(the easy casting kind)

Well, if you can find an "easy casting kind", go for it. I've tried several brands and never found anything superior (or even equal to) to mono or braid with a leader. Right now I'm running two rigs, one 7' and one 9' with 2# test Fireline and a 4# test fluoro leader. The fine braid affords me the options of depth & speed control and invisibility of the fluoro leaders helps with abrasion resistance. No problems casting either. You just have to try different set-ups and see what works best for you.

Lol I wish I could fish like that for trout, you must be fishing the white river where guys can throw jerkbaits on baitcasters and get browns

Yep. Catching rainbows and browns on rapala countdowns.

Seaguar Red Label 4# casts like a dream, but I normally fish with 1/64 and 1/32oz baits, rarely 1/8...I love braid and fluoro leaders for sensitivity and hooksets though, when I target bigger browns I use 6# nanofil and fluoro leaders.
