.270

Featured Replies

.270 is a great caliber especially since it's more available than 308 rounds. .270 rounds are so abundant that I though of switching over from my 308 just because I have to order them online and pay a decent chunk of cash unless you buy in bulk. As for using it on larger game it would be risky I wouldn't want to chance it on a trophy elk or try my luck on a mad bear however with the right conditions, bullet and shot placement a .270 would work. Just wouldn't be my first choice for big game.

7.62x54R...

I'm old school and vividly remember the Iron Curtain, the arms race etc. I just couldn't bring myself to the point of using a Russian round. Besides if I wanted to shoot a short .30 cal round I'd opt for a .308. Hunting ammo is much easier to find, brass is readily available for reloading. Allot of the 7.62x54 casing is steel: and please don't be shooting deer with a fmj military surplus ammo. FMJ ammo is designed to wound not kill. There is little energy transfer and no mushrooming of the round.

54R is $13 a box instead of $20 a box though. Lol plus, I'm just a Russian weapons guy. I don't hunt so the FMJ does fine for me. I wouldn't mind getting a VEPR in 54R or an AK in 5.45x39 or 7.62x39.

I believe when you move up to big boned animals e.g. Elk, brown bear and > you need to ramp up the energy always at the expense of velocity. I leave my 270 WSM home. If I had to stay under 30 caliber it would be a 7mm STW or Roy.

The Russian barnaul 7,62x54r 203gr soft point was $4.95 a box of 20.

I've hunted with that a few times.
