Question on line guide size and placement on rods.

Featured Replies

I am attempting to put it all together on my first rod build. I have done all my research ---splines,handles, blanks, etc. I know that my first build is going to be a learning process so, I am not too intimidated but, I have read so much on guide placement and some of the things I have read have been conflicting in the placement of guides. I would feel better if I could get some imput from some of the guys, as well as, some different opinions in order to generate my own. After much reading and taking measurments on some of my rods in different lengths, actions and wts. I am a little curious, and quite frankly, somewhat  confused, in which isn't a new feeling for me,lol. I am sure these are generic formula's I am reading about on placement, as well as size, of line guides for spinning rods, bait casters and fly rods are fine but, I am looking for some experiance and suggestions. I am going to keep my first build simple and starting out with a spinning rod with a tenn. handle in which I prefer anyway. Thanks, this would be appreciated.

Hey Jim,

Guide size is a function of the length of the rod and the type of fishing you will do. For light to med. heavy freshwater, I would suggest a Fugi Concept set similar to these...

http://shop.mudhole.com/YSG-Concept-Spinning-Guides?sc=2&category=173  at least you will have an idea about sizes. If you follow Tom Kirkman's directions for concept spacing I think you will be very happy with your guide spacing. Link to that article...

I hope this is helpfull to you.

I just noticed the Newbies questions on rod building link. Thanks ReelMech. I am getting senile, as well as still thawing out from the Susquehanna trip the other day. Brrrrrr !!! It sure was worth it though, they were hungry, to say the least !!!
