How Long Does It Take For Tackle To Rust From Freshwater Fishing?

Featured Replies

When I get home after fishing I open up my tackle boxes to let them air out. I know there is usually water or condensation in there.

Last night I was in a rush and forgot to open them up. I did it this morning around 4am.

I was wondering how long it takes tackle to rust from freshwater fishing. Can tackle rust overnight from freshwater fishing?

It's possible for rust to develop over night. But a few hours of dampness shouldn't be an issue.

It depends if you keep salted plastics with your lures in the same box?

I try to keep it all seperate in different boxes and In sealed plastic bags.

I leave my box open at home so it can dry out.

I keep my tackle box shut in the rain.

I keep my used wet lures seperate and put them out to dry at home if there really soaked I hang them up.

As long as there wasn't a lot of water actually inside the boxes, you should be fine.

I have only had rust when I forgot to open the box AND it actually had a water in it. Never seen rust from one day to the next.

I fish lakes around the Waco TX area and I never have had a rust issue and I don't do anything but it may be like big bill said I keep my salted baits sealed

So you guys are saying it's fine to not even open them up as long as there isn't a lot of water in them, that some condensation and water in them from putting a wet lure in there won't cause rust?

If you know they are wet, why not dry them? I have hurried many times and had split rings and hooks oxidize ... No shortage of Fertilizer/ and who knows all the chemical residues in or around you're waters.... Newer hooks hold way better than older styles/ materials.... I usually clean my rod blanks as well as wiping down my reels/ old saltwater habit.... Still corrosion can attack your guides frame, as well a reel seat... It happens.
