Anyone Try A Trailer Hook With A Solid Body Frog/toad Like The Ragetail?

I've never had great success with hollow body frogs like Spro Frogs and such until recently when I had some success with a Savage Gear 3D frog. Although I haven't had success with it since. However, I always had great success with Ragetail Toads. On the retrieve or on the sink they plain just catch fish. I've tried Zoom Horny Toads, Stanley Ribbett Frogs and such but nothing has ever worked like the Ragetail. It's the #2 top producer for me. The problem is that I only have about a 70-80% hook up ratio with it in the pads and grass. In the open water it's pretty good at hooking them. And I do sharpen the hooks often.

So, I decided to try a trailer hook on it. I don't want the trailer hook to get caught up so I am only using a 4/0 Gamakatsu springlock hook which keeps it closer to the head and when I add the trailer hook it pulls it in closer to the body instead of having it trailing way behind. And the trailer hook is a 1/0 size. It's sort of tucked in between the legs. I am going to try to make a rubber weed guard for the trailer from tubing or heat shrink and I always skin the main hook.

We'll see how it goes. Has anyone else tried a trailer hook on a solid body frog before?

I'll post a review after I'm done trying this experiment.

Never really fel that my hookup was low enough to warrant them, but that is a really neat idea. I wouldn't be opposed to just using an eagle claw weedless work hook with the spring weed guard, though the spring may not work too well with the frog in the way. However, if you used a big hook that came out neat the back of the frog, you may have clearance.

Please let us know how it works. I throw buzz frogs a lot, so I will keep up with this one.

You can also rig a treble hook in place of the one you have in your picture.

Wouldn't that have to be a long, long shank treble hook?
