Types Of Baitcasting Reels More Appropriate For Specific Types Of Lures...?

Featured Replies

I have 3 baitcasting reels, a BPS Bionic w/dual centrifugal braking, an Abu Garcia Orra 2SX with magnetic brakes and a Daiwa Tatula with Magnetic brakes. I am wondering if each of these reels is more suited to throwing certain lures types than the others? Are there any guidelines regarding type of lure and weight versus braking system...? I'm throwing a Zara Spook with the Tatula, Spinnerbaits with the Bionic and lighter topwater lures with the Orra. Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks!

For me it doesn't really matter. However when using lighter lures the dual braking system helps more for me.

Not that I am aware of.  If one has a Carbon side plate or frame, I would be using it on a rod for light lures figuring I would be putting less stress on the reel since in my case light lures means light line which means I will be fishing in open water.

However, some reels are better than others at handling light lures.  I don't own any of those particular reels.  I do have 2 older BPS Carbonlites (dual brakes).  They are spooled with 6# mono and currently get used  with 1/4 oz. or less lures.  I have no lure preference on any of my mag only reels.  The rod power and action determines what will be used with a particular reel.

Not owning any of those models, the only advice I can offer is to try each with different lures and see what handles the best for you.

As the other poster stated, lighter lures is where you will need to be more careful in the selection of the reel to be used.  My Carbonlites handle 3/16 oz. great, and I am just starting to practice with 1/8 oz.
