What Rod Would You Suggest?

Featured Replies

Hey all!  I'm looking to get a new rod for one of my favorite reels.  It's a Quantum IR300C. I know its not the best reel, and its old, but it is so comfortable to fish and it runs like a well oiled machine.  The reel clamp on the rod that I had it on decided to break the other day, so I'm looking for a replacement.  I want to put this reel on a rod that I'll use for carolina rigging and cranks.

Is there a rod that you would suggest that would be good for both applications?  I'm assuming 7ft - 7'6ft at least.  Medium/MF action?  Any suggestions would be great.  I've always been the type of fisherman that just bought a rod because it felt comfortable, and then figured out what I was going to use it for.  I'm trying to get specific rods for specific applications now, though some will have multiple uses.

Let met know your thoughts!

Thanks all!!

Carolina rigs and cranks require different rod actions

for cranking a Medium/MedHvy/Heavy rod with moderate action, power determined by lure weight

for Carolina rigs a Heavy rod with a fast action to ensure good hooksets when fishing deep

Thanks fishguy.  I wasnt sure if I could get away with a combo.  I'll probably make that reel a c-rig setup since it has slow retrieve and then get new gear for cranking.

That old IRON is an awesome reel....... I have one that sits on a shelf looking pretty. Lol. It is a much better caster than I am and I can't control it at all. I cranked with it for a few months though- smooth as glass!

I think you would have no problem using a 7'6" mh/f for both a Carolina rig and a crank rod. I use a mh/f crucial for my Carolina rod, and that's the thing I do most - by far! It would make a fine deep/medium crank rod, though the tip may be a tiny fast for it.

My only issue would be the low gear ratio on the Carolina rig- but that's a personal preference. If its comfortable to you. ....have at it! Any MH/F 7'6"rod around the $100 mark will be fine- even better up to $150.

Try some out and pick the one that feels the best with the iron on it!

Good luck!

Thanks for the info!  Sine you fish carolina rigs a lot, in your experience would you think that a moderate or moderate/fast would be too noodley to fish a c-rig?

I think you would be OK with a moderate fast. ...

I was thinking though, any time I'm throwing a c-rig, a deep crank could/should come into play. And vice versa. I wouldn't want to have to switch between the two on the same rod.

Good point.  Looks like I may be taking a trip to Cabelas/Bass Pro this weekend.

I just got a 7MH duckett micro magic paired with a lews tournament mg and I really like it.
