Dobyns Extreme Casting 742

Featured Replies

Noticed this is on sale at tackle warehouse for $270. I don't have any extremes but I would love to try one especially at that price but has anyone used this model? Is it very versatile? I was thinking it would be good for 1/4-1/2 oz jigs and senkos. Any thoughts?

The max jig weight I'd put on it would be 1/4oz. Anything move will be far too much IMO. Weightless Senkos, it's my favorite rod. This is also my shakey head rod. I use it for lighter t-rigs and other finesse type presentations. If you want a rod that can handle all those that you listed, I would look at the DX 744, though it does not look like its on sale.

It also makes a decent lipless crankbait rod up to 1/2oz.

I looooooooooove this rod but as was stated, for finesse stuff like shakey heads and weightless plastics. Heck even heavier drop shots but no jigs above 1/4 and trailer.

Great rod and more versatile than most would think

Certainly a finesse rod... Senkos, yes by all means, but jigs up to a 1/2oz IMO is pushing it. Senkos weigh a good bit, but (at least for me) fishing Senkos wacky rigged, at least the hook is exposed. Fishing a jig, especially deep, the rod comes  a bit short for hook setting power, especially with most jig hooks being quite stout. I fish both jigs and senkos on my 743 casting and love it, but I only go up to 3/8oz MAX for jigs on that rod, and mostly 1/4oz.

It would be a great shaky head, drop shot, senko rod with 8lb fluorocarbon and a nice light weight finesse bait casting reel.
