Looking For A New Kayak

Featured Replies

I just got into kayak bass fishing and I was wondering if anybody knew of a good kayak for beginners. I used to have an inflatable kayak until it popped... But anyways i was looking at the Jackson Big Rig, if you know anybody that has one or heard anything about them let me know. I was also looking at the Pelican Castaway 116. Any help?

Thanks,

Alex.

I would recommend buying the cheapest, most solidest, most comfortable sit-on-top kayak you can find on your local Craigslist.

Alternatively, buy a patch kit and fix your inflatable.

I think it's perfectly alright for beginners to use beginner equipment.  No need to break the bank if you're just getting into a sport.

Welcome to the forums, Alex.

Definitely use the Search feature to the upper right on the forum page. There have been a lot of discussions on kayaks for beginners, accessories, etc.

You mention Jackson's Big Rig and Pelican Castaway, a pretty big difference in price there. What is your maximum budget? How big are you (answer can help with recommendations for size, etc.), what kind of waters do you fish, etc... More info can help us narrow suggestions down.

There are quite a few options out there in many prices ranges.

Buy used.

Go to your local kayak rental company and ask to rent a few. Find one you like and make them an offer. Most rental places sell their fleet when new models come in, manufacturers want the latest and greatest available to rent.

My buddy got a 15ft OK biggame for $400.

I got my WS tarpon for the same.
