Getting Started

Featured Replies

Hi, Im going to try and make some lures.

Starting with a top water, Wondering what type of paint you guys use to paint your lures? Any special brands or just any waterproof paint?

Seen some pictures on here and the paint finish looks great on all of them.

Also if there are any web sites that would offer good information to begginers intrested in lure makeing I would really apreciate it.

Im mostly intrested in making swim, float, and crank baits.

Thanks.

You can get all the info you need right here, do a search for all post by Whittler (he builds a solid crankbait).

topwaters are not the easiest baits to build, you might want to start will a shallow running flat sided bait to get your feet wet.  Balsa wood is the easiest wood to carve and shape.

The finish on my baits and whittler's is not from the paint, it's clear topcoat.  I use water based paint and the topcoat makes it water proof.

get you some 1/2 thick balsa, 20gage stainless steel wire, a good carving knife, 150 and 400 grit sandpaper.

when you have your supplies, I can help thru the rest.

Do not worry about paint and finish untill you make a bait that works like you want, once the design is right and the action is what you want then its time to think about finish. Like Marty said do all your drilling for hook hangers, weights and cut the lip slot while the block is square, keeping everything alinged now will pay big time later. When I'm working on a prototype I cut several lip styles and do not glue them in until the action is right, with a tight slot they will hold well enough for testing. When the wood is shaped you can use a sealer so it won't absorb water while testing, once its like you want then go crazy with the paint.
