Hey guys...if you have any lure modification ideas or secrets, would you mind posting them here as how-to's. Having how-to's on customizing hardbaits such as Whittler's "Poor-Man's Pointer" or even less intricate how-to's on bending the blades on prop baits to change their spit. Tips on jigs such as trimming weed guards and replacing skirts and even tying skirts. Just anything like that to give us anglers something to do on rainy days or cold days or for those of us who like to be creative  8-).

I thought there would be a ton of responses to this post.

There are several of the less expensive crankbaits out there that can be made to run with the big dogs with a little time and effort. The little fat diving crank for $2 that Walmart sells has great action and can be made to get about 2ft. deeper with no problem. I know there are a ton of great ideas out there if they will just post them.

That's what I was thinking...maybe they're all top-secret?  

that live pointer poor mans deal is kinda cool...can something like that be done to a deep diving crank?

There are probably no end to the modifications that can be made to crankbaits, deep or shallow. One thing I have learned is you can not be shy about cutting a bait apart because to make sure what your dealing with you must look inside. Over the years I have gotten quite a collection of bait autopsy crankbaits, everything from Renegade, Rapala DT, Norman, Bagley, Poe's, even a couple of LC.

As you look at the bait pictured( start of the "poor man's pointer" ) you can tell why the 3 bbs in the rear are glued into place, if they were allowed to roll free each time the bait hit the water the weights would roll to the rear and cause the tail to sink instead of sitting level. Moving forward in the bait you will see there is not enough room for the 4 front bbs to pass through because the hook retainer on the bottom and the mold key on top, so they can be allowed to remain free. You can also get rid of those plastic rattle balls. You should see what can be done with the $2 Renegade deep diver.

I can't take it anymore. I'd hate for you to be the only one to give up any plans, but all this talk about the Renegade DD has got me itchin'. If you ever get bored and if you don't mind, would you please post the details to that project. Maybe it will spark more interest and shared ideas.

This isnt a huge change but I like to take a snap and increase the space between the hook and body with a rocket shad and sometimes I will take renegade rattle/bands and put them on spinners to make the more bouyant.

For anybody who adds a little color to store bought crankbaits, what kind of paint do you use and do you put anything over that?

I usually add a little red with a paint marker.  You don't have to coat it with anything, but it will come off after a little use.

Fingernail polish, Cheap and in many colors.
