Gander Mountain has a 10% sale going on this month.   I love my Fenwick HMG spinning rods.  I'm now in the market for a nice seven foot baitcaster rod to throw crankbaits and spinnerbaits.  I will admit I think those HMX rods look nice, very nice.  They feel nice too.  They come with a five year warranty.  But, are they the same quality as my HMG spinning rods?  Will I get my money's worth out of one?  They want around $89.00 for the HMX rods.  

 

 Any opinions of the HMX baitcaster rods?

The guides are cr*ap on the HMX. Likewise on the HMG, they are really nice. The HMG's also have a lifetime warranty.

 I would go for another HMG but I would have to order one online and then I would have pay for shipping plus an extra $7 for shipping which would make the $99 HMG a $120 rod.  Gander Mountain has some Abu Garcia rods too.  I'll take a look at those this week.

Also don't forget to check ffo occasionally for Fenwick rods.   Some pretty nice deals can be had.  The trick is finding the one you want.  Models offered change.  That is why you can't look one time and then forget about the site.

The guides on the HMX are stainless steel framed aluminum oxide inserts, I don't know the supplier but the G.Loomis GL2 uses the same stainless steel guides with aluminum oxide inserts but those are Fuji. They aren't the best but they are plenty good for bass fishing with braid. That said, the HMX is a little heavier than the HMG and lacks the sensitivity level but it isn't a bad rod at all for the price and if you can get the 7' MH-MF you'll be set or the 7' M-F, both will work fine for those types of baits.

It depends. Some of the reconditioned are simply factory returns, Others... well they might have been broken. When I shop at ffo I never buy the reconditioned tackle- I only buy the discontinued tackle which are new.

I stand corrected.

I wouldn't go below the HMG when it comes to Fenwick. I bought a few of the HMG's last year and one HMX. I have yet to even mount a reel on the HMX because I don't like how heavy it is, and how poor the guides look. It was a poor decision to buy them online without seeing them in person. I'll probably end up selling it to a friend once they decide to upgrade from a "Wal Mart Special" rod.
