Looking For A Camping Spot In Va

Featured Replies

I'm trying to plan a camping trip with my brother this spring, but we're having a hard time finding a spot that fits what we're looking for. Basically, we only have two requirements:

1. The spot needs to be on the water.

2. We'd prefer a group spot or something with a similar amount of privacy. Campgrounds with tons of people around blasting their music all day isn't really our idea of getting away from things.

I've looked at all the VA state parks, and don't really see a good fit for us. Do you know of any other places that might work? We live in Richmond, and are up for a 2-ish hour drive in any direction (which also puts parts of NC in play).

You could try Bethel Park Reservoir in Hampton Virginia its military but I think they have for civilians also

Virginia State Parks has several primitive sites that are canoe or kayak in but also hike in at Powhatan Statw Park and Belle Isle State Park separate from regular campground. Only a few sites so not typical campgrounds. Right on the water.

Check out any bodies of water you are interested in camping for private campsites.

Like Rock-A-Hock or Ed. Allen's on the Chick and Chick Lake.

Or private homes on Smith Mountain Lake for weekly rentals.

Craig or one of his employees at Tackle Express may have some knowledge of private campgrounds.

GMCO maps will show these private locations.  If you don't have a GMCO map of the waters you want to fish then go to Green Top or BPS and look at the maps in the store.

How you are fishing will have an impact on your decision: bass boat, kayak, raft or bank fishing.

Each county has their own places to camp. You may have to invest some time and look at various camping locations within the counties to find a good spot.

Here is one web site for Fluvanna County that shows camping sites: http://www.hikercentral.com/campcounty/Virginia_Fluvanna.html

Good luck and don't forget your needle nose pliers.
