I want to hook up my Garmin Echo 200 fish finder this spring to my kayak.  I have all the parts to hook it up.  Now I just need to power it. 

 

 The manual says the Power Source Voltage Range is 10-28 Vdc.  Does that mean it can handle more than 12 volts?  I know a lot of people power their sonar units from big batteries like riding lawnmower batteries that are 12 volt.  I just bought plastic pack at Radio Shack that holds 8 AA batteries and I do believe that should equal 12 volts.  I already tried it and it does power my Garmin.  Now I'm wondering -  could I go back to Radio Shack and buy a larger plastic pack that holds larger batteries like C or D and safely use those if they don't go over 28 volts?  I'm going to stick with my 8 AA pack for this spring but I want to make sure I understand the voltage range right in case I want to upgrade later this spring or summer.

hoosierbass you will be fine  with the battery packs .  the unit will not work if there is to much voltage or not enough  as long as its betewwn 10 and 14 you will be golden . Look on ebay for a battery called Powersonic  I have the 7 amp hr  one and use that on my Kayak  works great and will last all day easy

I believe Cabelas sells small 12v, as a pair with a charger(cheaper elsewhere) that will work well too.

Some use the rechargeable battery that game cameras come with.

This is what I use.  It's like $35, comes with a charger, 8 amphours, and lasts me a long long time on a charge.
