General "Bill" priciples

Featured Replies

Wondering about toying with different bill shapes to make different types of wakes.

In Big M's thread w/ his 7" swimbait, he comments about the width affecting how exaggerated the side to side action is.  Larger= wider wobble?

Anyone ever play with alternative shapes to help push more or less water?  Other than the width?

How about bills that are convex or concave,...anyone ever play with stuff like that? (gotchya thinking now, eh?  hehe)

Wider bill = wider wobble

square bills have a wider wobble than rounded bills.

Longer the bill, the deeper the depth.

Bills with steep angles dive less

Thin bills will cut through the water and hence dive deeper than thicker bills.  (poly vs. circuit board)

Some people heat up and bend their lips but I haven't done it personally.

Instesd of a lot of guesswork, try some various styles and see which gives you the desired action. If you will cut the lip solt to the material you plan on using then simply make several lips and test them. If the lips are a little loose just put a small piece of tape on it and put it in place, make sure you have sealed the wood first. When you go out to test take a file and a sanding block so that you can alter the lips while on the water. What a bait looks like in a bathtub is not the same as on the water where a cast is possible. Once you have settled on a style and shape you like then you can remove it and use it for your pattern to make as many as you like. Line tie placement can also have a dramatic effect on action, so give your self some alternatives there too.

idlov2fish has the process down to the letter.    A lot of builders use that method to test diff. shaped lips.    Adding to his point on line tie position, that alone can make a bait act totally different.    I've had several test baits that did not run good and put the line tie in the lip and wow what a bait.

I use a lip like the bomber long A in my smaller wake baits.   It gives the bait a less aggressive action which I like on the smaller bait.
