Need Help! On New Set Up - Rod And Reel

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I been doing alot of research on the best setup for rod and reel and it has been extreamly hard to narrow things down and its driveing me crazy.

I use to fish with my dad back in the days and its been 20 years since i have done it and i miss beyond belif. So i wanna get back into it and rekindle the old memories.

i am sure lots has changed since the last 20 years so here is my question. Back then i only used live bait but now i hear of the Wacky worm set up that drives Bass WILD!

So my question is, What is the best / Most recommended Spinning Rod and Reel (Total price for both about $300 - $400)

So far i was thinking  Quantum Energy PT with Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0. (did not hear any bad about the reel but herd the Abu is prone to breaking - and i dont want a rod that breaks)

All i am looking for what would be the top 3 reel or Rod choice. (I herd Fenwick is godly, but St Croix is good value - but all the versions confuse me)

Thanks for the HELP!! :respect-059:

Welcome to the forum.  You might want to fill out your profile so we know a little about you.

Abu has been around a long time.  I imagine they were aware of the breakage problem, and the 2.0 is the result.  I am not familiar with that rod or reel.  From what I have read, I would say they would be fine.

However, you needn't spend that much for a quality combo unless you want to.  I have something like 6 different models of Fenwick rods.  I have always felt I got a lot for my money.  A 7' MF in either the HMG, Elite Tech Bass or Aetos would make for a very versatile rod.  The Pflueger President is an excellent reel for it price.  Lots of guys on here are going to point you towards a Shimano.  I can't help there either as I only have one, and it is an older model.  The HMG/President would run about $160.  Or you could buy a rod and reel that each cost that much.  I would lean towards the latter personally if I had the money because I appreciate using quality gear.  Not that it will catch more fish for me, but it gives me more pleasure while striking out.  :teeth:

Get a pflueger president and veritas 2.0 $150 for a heck of a combo. Spend the rest on quality line and lures. The 2.0 is a whole different Rod from the rest version abu messed and and they fixed it. you can not beat a pflueger president im telling you I've never seen no one diasappointed with one. Will the 2.0 be as good as a $200 Rod? No but trust me no Rod will will feel $100 better. Pretty much any of the $100 rods today with a quality line is all anyone needs. Anyone who says they can't "feel a bite" on today's $100 rods can't fish plain and simple. If I was you I would pick up that combk but if you want to spend that micj go for it! Only you know what will make you hapoy.

They are right, there are plenty of rods for 100 dollars that will fish well. I'm still using a spinning combo that has been excellent for the last 12 years. A shimano stradic 3000 and a 7 ft med fast st croix avid. I absolutely love this setup and if has held up well for me after all this time.

thanks for the tips guys ... i did not know the 2.0 was that well rounded .... i read in some reviews that the reaction / sensitivity was not as good as the older versions but i guess if you have good set up and line you will be ok.

the pflueger president definately sound good for price vs quality ratio... i will definaly consider it!!!

how are the fenwick rods? my brother used them and he swears by them but how do they compare to the 2.0?

oh and where would i go for some info on lines ?
