Question on pouring lead

Featured Replies

So i poured my first batch of silver buddies today. I was basically tired of paying $2 a peice for them so i bought the stuff to make them. But i have a question? They turned out good but they almost look like there is gills on them where the lead is  kinda wavy on some of them and then other ones are really smooth on the lead. Any idea why some are smooth and some are kinda wavy? Just curious if anyone else has noticed this? Is my mold not hot enough to take the lead or what was i doing wrong. They look fine just wondering why some of them are not as smooth as others. Going to pour Football Jigs next  :o

When pouring lead you need your molds warm, and you need a good flow of lead.  If the lead just trickles in to the mold you will get the wavy lines because the lead is setting up while you are pouring more on top of it.  With molds requiring a lot of lead you should pour with a ladle.

thanks for the info. So basically my problem is my mold is not hot enough? right.

You don't say what type of melter you have, I'm basing my info on what I use a Lee Production Pot IV bottom pour. Even before I got this I used a Hot Pot II and didn't have any problems.

I pour them using tire weight lead and I found that I poured about 8 times with no blanks in the mold to get it up to the right temp. I also used a hair dryer to warm up the brass and silver blanks.

Depending on which mold you have there's really not much more lead on a Silver buddy type lure than you'd pour for a jig head.

i have a lee bottum pouring pot and the mold was from do it. I found out that if you get the mold warm it will pour a lot easier.

I always pour a few practice pours without any hooks in the mold to help heat the mold and get the flow right.
