Finish Wrap question?

Featured Replies

As long as you keep it dust free and do not flex the blank I would think it would not matter if you went a few days without putting a finish coat on the threads. I have went as long as 10 days due work schedules without ill effects. I kept the blank in the original bag to keep it free of dust and such.

If you put a coat of CP then wait as long as you want, just keep it clean.

Just my 2 cents.

Eric

I'm with Eric.  There is really not a time limit that I am aware of.  The big consideration is picking up dust and something happening to your wraps the longer it sits.

As soon as I am finished wrapping, if going to use CP, I apply CP as soon as I can.  I wait 24 hours after CP applied then finish.  The waiting 24 hours is just me.  Supposedly you can finish 4 - 8 hours after CP, but, I put it on pretty thick and had one instance where after 6 hours it was still damp/tacky.  Also, once applied I do not touch.  Once again, many rods ago, tried to "clean up" the CP and the finish was crap and ended up re-doing.  So, for that reason, I never touch the wraps again once burnished and prepped/ready for CP and/or finish.

OK, was wondering, I've done three raps and I'm a bit fatigued, I still got the baggy, I'll keep it in it.

What is this abbreviation of CP?  I'm sorry for not knowing it?

CP = Color Preserve

ahhh well I got plenty of that ::)

give me a moment to laugh at myself ;D ;D

I also know I hate wrappen the big guides, I did alot better on the small ones 12's and under.

I moved some of the guides around on parctice casting, boy that was a pain cause, it was cold outside that day :D

The thing I had to do was add another guide and it casted alot better, it casted good with the guides I did have on there, but I changed up a little more when I did the pole stress and saw some line cutting I was not likeing still, that was a hard choice, tryen to keep wieght down but have an accurate rod. seemed noisy'er too this way?  wierd

You're on your way!  The fatigue will of course get better.  20+ years of playing electric and upright bass have helped condition my hands.  But they still get a little tired if been wrapping a while.

That's great  you are test casting and stressing.  Amazing the folks I hear that have dimensions, slap the guides on and go.  I lay my guides out based upon dimensions I have, then stress test and take outside and throw.  BTW, I have become A HUUUUGE fan of using tubing to hold the guides as opposed to tape.  SO, much easier to move/adjust and holds a lot easier and better than tape.

That is good that smaller guides are easier for you.  I am just the opposite.  Love the big guides.  I can wrap a surf rod in half the time it takes for lighter rods - even with 2x-foot guides on the surf rod.

Keep posting those pics.

Fishingbuds,

Tom Kirkman was saying in a post on his forum, that the test they performed with the casting machine were similar to your findings. The ones that had more distance were noisier. This could be due to increased lure velocity. Meaning the line is having to be "tamed" by the guides faster as the line is moving faster also.

Eddie,

Turns out we have more in common than just these old mountains. Played guitar for more than 20 years myself. Gave it up back about 3 years ago to spend more time fishing.   8-)  Hard to fish after playing until 2 in the morning.

Thanks Eddie, well the big guides seemed to show up more qulity issues than the small ones, so I ended up really working on the big ones to look good.

As for the tubing I'l take that advice :D what is it that your using, shrink tubing??

That'd be intresting to read, where is that? was it in another book?

This is what I use:

Got some of each size.  Cut them in 1/16", or less, pieces then slide them on.  Easier to do before the tip-top is on, but, can be done with some effort after.

I also found some larger at the medical supply store near the house.  Got some 1/4" and 5/16" for larger blanks and surf rods.  It really does make things easier.  So much easier to move and adjust guides.

THat is good!  Yes, unfortunately I have put it down as well.  Between, work and family (and fishing) just could not devote the time I wanted to it.  Music was/is my first love, but, sometimes just got to do what you got to do - no fun is it being a responsible adult?

Fishingbuds,

The information I am referring to is off of Tom's Forum board.

rodbuilding.org

After you get there, do a search spinning rod setups and guide placement during test casting.

Hmm :-?

That was deep, I have to say tho, there's somethen to it, when I changed up and added a guide I thought on the first few cast that I had back lashed the line from the sound? It made me miss where the wieght went too, cause I was busy looking at my reel thinking it tangled up, I have to be honest, I kinda accepted that my reel was fried. But now I guess I have a mystery.

Thanks Eric I appreciate that info. I really don't know what to do with that, you know listen for noise, along with guide placement, I guess you guys playen instruments could come up with a tune fork on rod casting we'd be set ;D

well I did lay on the finish poxy, but once again the wifey has the camera >:D and the cell camera is junky pics. I'll post them on my other rod build topic tomorrow.

thanks guys

Hey Tony,

Just a little tip to make big guides easier to wrap. Wrapping thread comes in different sizes (diameter) A size being small (diameter) and E size being larger (diameter) I try to use a thread size proportional to the guide size. On big surf guides, I will use E size tread, on stripper guides on a medium baitcaster I use C or D size thread and on micro or fly guides A or B size. Give it a try. I hope this helps.
