Weighted Butt Or Not?

Featured Replies

How many of you weight the butt of the rod? Is it good or bad?

I will weight it if the balance is less than desirable. Typically, I'll just buy rods that balance well, instead of jerry-rigging something. Nothing bad about it at all, unless you're purposely trying to have an ultra lightweight combo.

I have a few rods that were really tip heavy.  A simple fix was getting a few chair bumpers and adding coins.  They balance under the reel now and feel lighter and more sensitive.  The bumper also helps protect the butt so I couldn't be happier.  I never understood buying heavier reels to try to balance a combo.  It's the most ineffective way to achieve balance because it's too close to the fulcrum.  I'd rather buy the lightest reel possible and counter weight the rod if it needed it.
