Zoom Ol Monster: Salted Or Not?

Featured Replies

Anyone know if the zoom ol monster is salted or not? I wanted to experiment throwing it on a 1/4 ounce- 3/8 shakey head, but if its salted and will just flop around on the bottom i wont bother.

No it is not salted. I would not recommend throwing it on a shakey head, you will miss a LOT of fish. Use it on a T-Rig or Carolina Rig for the best results. Good luck!

I wouldn't put it on a traditional shakey head. ..... but if you put it on a 3/4oz football jighead and fish it on offshore humps and points - hold on tight. .....

yum makes a stand up shakey head jig with a 4/0 hook, so i figured I would give that a go. I know that I'll miss some of the smaller fish, and I know that this would't be the most productive method, but I figure it would be kind of fun

I have not used the Ol Monster yet but I use a MegaStrike finesse shakey head with a 2/0 hook and many large worms. I have not noticed a problem with hooking up with fish, even with just a 2/0 hook. I have had good luck with a Rage Tail Anaconda worm, Rage Tail Cutr worm, Zoom G Tail Ringer(Salted), Havoc Juice worms, Culprit Ribbontails, and more. MegaStrike also makes an EWG 4/0 shakey head for larger plastics. When I have the salted zoom g tail ringer on I usually toss it, hop it around abit, maybe swim it back, just fish it abit faster/keep it moving more so it doesn't just sit on bottom.

Thats why im looking for a non salted- floating worm so that I can have the large worm approach but still fish it slow like I would with a shakey head or finesse worm.

I went to YouTube and typed in Zoom Ol Monster video and there is a video of one in a fish tank, it sinks. I was thinking maybe the Creme 10" ribbontail would be good, because their scoundrels stand up great on a shakey head, but I have not used them and could not find a video of one in a tank. I did watch a couple other tank videos, and you might want to look into the Kicker Fish Hightail ribbontail worm, it is an 11" inch worm with air pockets in the tail that make it stay up, very cool looking. I will probably have to try them myself after seeing them now!

I'm going to tell you that worms with salt and sink do just as well as stand up when fished on a shaky head. I've tried this experiment for a long time fishing side by side with one guy using a floating worm and the other using a salt loaded worm, we fished during a good bite on shaky heads and we switched back and forth to make sure we each fished each worm and over a 3 year period we found that both catch fish at approximately the same rate. There were a few days that a floating worm prevailed but there was also a few days in which the sinking worm did better. The other thing is I make my own shaky heads, and I make some for friends and one guy turned me onto a great technique, and that is fishing a Zoom Old Monster in green pumpkin magic or blackberry on a 3/8oz shaky head with a 5/0 hook in 8' to 12' of water. I fished with my buddy the day after I gave him the heads he wanted and I watched him use that set up while I used a regular 5" finesse worm, I got the first 2 fish, a 12" barely legal keeper and a nice 15.5" largemouth, after I released it he got his first bite, a solid 19.75" that weighed 4lb 11oz. That was all I needed to see, and what was really strange is I wasn't getting many more fish, I think I caught 4 more fish but all of his were decent with the smallest being a little over 13". Give it a shot, just because it has salt in it don't think it won't work, I now use it every summer and I have a lot of confidence in it.

Love this worm in grape color t rigged or lately it's been on a rocker style jig head. Bluebasser86 makes the perfect ones for it.

Ive never been one for worms that are not either black, or some shade of green or brown, however I stopped at work and picked up a bag of the plum color and man do they look great. Ill be fishing these mostly in stained ponds so I wanted to go with something darker, and the plum had the right amount of speck and flash for me. And do you have any pics or posts about Bluebasser's heads? would he be willing to do business with me?lol
