Flex coat

Featured Replies

Will flex coat react with oil and lacquer based paint? I tried spar urethane and clear lacquer as topcoats but the urethane was brown tinted and kinda soft and the lacquer reacted with the paint even after I pre-coated it with water based clear. I'm using rust-oleum metallic paint and I don't want to waste any epoxy experimenting to find out if the two will react with each other.

you probably need a non-reactive coat of something before coating with flex coat. I'd try createx clear. I usually coat one time with it before spraying with Dick nites just incase it want's to try and give me a headache.

If you do use flex coat make sure it's the new Ultra V.   That's the clear I use on all of my baits.

What will happen if it's not the Ultra V? I don't know if it is because I ordered from barlows and they don't have any pics of the 8oz. size.

If Barlow's did not state it was Ultra V then it's just the basic high build.

It's going to yellow in a short period of time.   All clear coats yellow over time but it's the amount time it takes that is different for each clear coat.   I left Devcon after 5yrs because it was yellowing very fast.

I order my stuff from Mud Hole.

i Strongly suggest that you try some DURAGLOSS LS Supreme. I have been very happy with it on my freshwater rods and Surfcasting rods as well. Very durable, very easy to use, levels nice, thin... I tried everything else and ended up with this.

Second choice would be Threadmaster, Third choice aftcote.

Flexcoat has let me down with cracking and yellowing, I just broke down two 7 year old builds I did and was disgusted at the degree of yellowing. A few Long Island rod-builders are using this stuff and turned me onto it.

There are lots of good finishes I think that whichever one YOU become best at using, becomes your "best". Though flexcoat has gotten the rap of a yellowing finish from everyone, it is also the one most used on factory and custom rods as well so take that for what its worth, I personally have moved on to newer polymer technologies (Duragloss LS Supreme) and am  :) over it!
