Lure Finish

Featured Replies

Hey!

I just bought some Strike King Sexy Dawgs and I only had one timed on for the weekend. Fished Saturday for about 4-5 hours and then Sunday for about 2-4 hours. The finish on the lure is scratched from what I guess is normal use but where the hooks have been rubbing the finish (paint or whatever it is) is all gone.

If this typical of all lure companies or do some have better finishes then others. I not trying to bash one lure company from another just wanted to know if one company is known for having a finish that last longer then others or the other way around.

Lure finishes vary, some are really tough and last, while others chip and scratch easily.  Don't look at price as a way to tell if a finish is good, I have a few Luck Craft baits with paint flaking off but don't let it get to you, they still work.

Clear is a popular color for Spooks lol.

I've yet to use a brand of hardbait that didn't get hook rash eventually.  If anything, I tend to like my 'well-traveled' baits more than fresh ones....Hook rash and teeth scratches just mean you use them and they work ;).

I just didn't think it would happen this soon. I guess all it means are the hooks are sharp lol

If you think it's an issue there are a few things you can do:  bend the tines on your belly treble laterally so that they lay even on the bait.  This is "T-ing" a treble and a lot of musky fishermen do this on their large baits.  Switch your trebles out for Mustad KVD trebles, Mustad Triple Grip, or another brand treble on which the tines have an inward curve.  VMC also makes a style of treble that lays on the belly of a bait evenly.  I got some at Cabelas a few years ago but don't know it they still make them.

To me, the healthiest thing to do is forget the problem because the bass won't care about it.  Crankbaits do not have eternal life spans.  They get worn and so do their treble hooks.  When they stop catching fish, it's time to buy a new one.  Until then, throw them with abandon!
