What is the best way?

Featured Replies

to remove grips and the real seat from a rod? Will a heat gun work, or would boiling water melt the glue better? The grips are cork btw. Thanks :)

The only thing I have been able to do, is to cut the grip off as best as possible, and heat up the remaining epoxy to make it flake off, using a small torch, and small short sweeps across the area.  It takes a while, but using some kind of putty knife, or something like a plastic butter knife works best.

Good luck!

I use a Dremel cut off wheel to cut the reel seat lengthwise and then forcefully peel it off the blank.  A sharp fish filet knife will cut cork.  After the big pieces are off, a single edged razor blade will shave off the remaining epoxy.  It will go faster if you heat the handle with a heat gun as you work.  Needless to say, you need to be very careful not to cut into the blank anywhere!

I just re-read the question, and it seems I was reading it wrong.  As BobP said, the only really easy way to get it off, is to cut it with a rotary tool.  It can be done other ways, but it's not recommended that you try to boil the blank, as that could/would cause the materials to weaken.  Just use a dremel, or some kind of rotary tool, split it in the center, and remove.  Clean up the blank with a razor, and re-build it!  :)
