How do you paint scales?

paint a base color of what you want to appear between the scales (black for instance). heat set this layer. <--- important step: if you don't heat set it, then the paint has a high chance of rubbing off during the next steps... then wrap the bait in mesh of your choice (aquarium netting, cheese cloth, wedding tulle, bait net, cargo net, etc.) and spray the color that you want the scales to appear (silver for instance) lightly (not too light but not too heavy) through the mesh. wait several seconds (30+) for the paint to dry before removing the mesh. thats just basic, you can get creative with it however you want; different size mesh on the same bait, different colors/fading, etc. i've seen a few people on tackleunderground using a little halfmoon stencil do do overlapping scales like you'd see on a carp. i'm not quite sure how they do this (other than the stencil that they move up and down the bait) but it produces a cool effect.
