Could i make a split grip rod?

I dont really know how to do the wrapping stuff, but im not lookin for a fancy design for my first try. Do i need to wrap it or could i just get the glue off and then sand it to a smoother finish.

Other questions:

-Do i need a heat gun to get the cork off?

-Do i need to add like two inches to my handle? the length is pretty long and i dont think i would, the butt end is cork too.

-Would i just sand the cork to make it taper down to the rod blank?

-Is there a way to paint your rod a different color ;D?
