Mop Football Jig Tactics ?

Featured Replies

Just for grins - I picked up my first mop football jig in black living rubber with a few purple & blue silicon strands mixed in (Buckeye Lures Confusion Color Mop Football Jig) .

Those who fish the mop style football  jig with a living rubber skirt - any tips , tricks or tactics to share ? It appears the living rubber strands take on a life of their own even while the jig is sitting still on the bottom ...Seems like a good cold water jig to have in the line up - just need to know any differences than plain silicon skirt football jig in terms of the retrieve .

I've had great success keeping mine nice and slowly moving on the bottom. I tend to work mine as a finesse like jig.

When sitting still that great big skirt is really just window dressing for the trailer. Those rubber strands float up and away from the trailer making for a rather intimidating presentation to a small bass (which is why the mop jig is considered a big fish lure).

When I am fishing that style jig I will let it drop straight down on a slack line. Then I let it still still for a 10 count. A couple of twitches then still again. Then bump it forward 6-12 inches and again wait. The theory is that the living rubber does much of the attraction for you as those strands stay in motion.

Thanks - definately a different deal than fishing a silicon skirt football jig ... It appears more of a drag and stop is the ticket vs. short hops or even stroking like you would for a silicon skirt football jig (along with the standrard drag & drop technique) . Perhaps best to envision a jelly fish opening and closing on the retrieve with the living rubber skirt .
