Craft fur jig

Featured Replies

I wanted to make a buck tail swim jig today but didn't have any.  So I picked up the craft to practice with.  I had a j will head that I painted green pumpkin and put new 3D eyes on it.  What do you guys think??

That'll work! I tie a lot of walleye jigs with craft hair and they have much more movement than buck. I rarely even use buck anymore. Just don't put more than one together in a compartment in a box or you will have a heck of a tangle. Cheap pistol cases with foam inserts work best for hair jigs, take one side out and you have a foam jig box.

Here's a video by Paul Mueller about fishing craft hair jigs:

I tie and use a lot of craft fur jigs, they work well but tying them is different. Some guys hate using it because of the under fur but not all craft fur us created equal. Have you tied with buck tail before? I ask because your jig looks good, very good wraps and you say you are using the craft fur to practice. If you haven't used buck tail before, practicing with craft fur will actually hurt more than help, you learn muscle memory and wrapping skills with craft fur but the material handles so much easier than buck tail. The hardest part for beginners with buck tail is they don't get it tight enough, I've taught a lot of anglers around my area to tie and the most common issue I find with the first couple jigs is I can pull the hair out easy, buck tail has to be tied a little tighter than other materials. Anyway, you're off to a good start but it does look like you've been tying a few jigs before.

Thanks for all the replies... I have been tying for a bit but mostly crappie jigs. I have tied a couple buck tail jigs but they were for crappie.  I only have the color pink and didn't think the bass would like that.  Small jaw I have watched a ton of your videos and have learned so much.  I really appreciate your time for the videos.  Also just watched your video on marabou.... It was awesome Thank you for the advice I will remember that when I get some more buck tail.  Will thank you for the video. I will definately watch it

One of the best tips I can offer for removing the under fur of craft fur is to invest in a mustache comb or flea comb. It makes life so much easier.

Love tying with craft fur - have Darice, a bunch of the new Hairline stuff (hit a heck of a sale at Cabela's when I was out in Michigan visiting my grand daughter) and neither one is bad with the underfur on it.  The absolute best I've ever used is Targus craft fur but it's hard as heck to find!!!!!!

x2 with smalljaw on tightness of tying bucktail.  There are so many different types of hair for tying jigs!
