Rattletraps

Featured Replies

What is the best way to fish a Rattletrap? The way I've been doing it is throwing it near rocks, rock walls, mouth of creeks and in deeper waters on the river banks. I've been fishing the Strike King Diamond Shad 1/2oz. in many different colors with no hits to this day.

What am I doing wrong with these things?

As far as where your fishing them, I dont think your doing anything wrong.  You probably just haven't found that perfect retrieve that the fish are hitting at that moment.  Sometimes they might want a stop and go and other times could be as fast as you can reel.

One of my sure fire ways of catching fish on traps is to take a 1/2oz Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap in Diamond Dust and throw it over grassbeds.  When the trap nicks a piece of grass I rip it out of there.  That's a retreive that will work throughout most of the year because it is a pure reaction strike.  As long as there is grass, then you can catch them by ripping it through.

Like I said, vary your retrieve until you hit something that gets them going, or find some grass and rip it through it.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Try varying your speed during the retrieve.  I'll crank fast.....then stop...then start...then slow it down.  You can also fish it with a lift and drop.  If you get a strike, keep in mind what you were doing when the fish hit.  I get a lot of hits when I burn it, then stop it.  They'll hit it on the pause.

I find the best way for me is to fish them in the rocks, boat docks and flooded timber with varying retrives and bouncing them off the cover and pausing them and usually get hit on the pause off of cover.
