i am buying a 14' Jon. will get it this weekend. its coming with a 5hp gas motor. what can i expect from it as far as speed and power, i know i wont break records, but i have no idea.

Depends on year/make of motor, My  5 horse Tohatsu 4-stroke 2001  pushes my 12 foot aluminium v boat fully rigged with batteries,deck,storage,livewell etc. Converted it into a real bass boat rig last winter, it goes 15-20 mph,I expect you should go in between 5-10 mph,

To maxamize your speed and performance:

-New high quality spark plugs gapped to .3100

- Stab-il in gas, 10-30w oil if 4-stroke

- yearly maintanence check

-high quality prop

- trim motor up an inch or so (experiment)

-more weight in back since you cant get on plane with a 5 horse on a 14 foot boat.
