DDbasser
I have a 1999 Johnson 150 on a 1999 Javeline Renegade 18. I bought the boat late April, and it's been in the shop more than on the water. 1st time the oil injection system quit and I lost 2 cylinders. The place I bought the boat from fixed the 2 cylinders and it didn't cost me a dime. Now, 3 wks after getting it back I've lost 2 different cylinders. The place I bought the boat from is offering to put a new power head on the motor, on them, or if I choose I can buy a different boat. I'm considering a different boat, one with a Mercury. Has anyone else had trouble with there Johnson outboard? I'm really getting frustrated, this is my first bass boat and I'm wanting to start fishing tourny's. But I'm losing confidence in this boat fast!! Any helpful suggestions welcomed!!!
Nick_Barr
First, Johnsons are peices of junk, the powerheads always have trouble, If they are going to put on another powerhead it better not be a johnson made powerhead, If they are going to put a different companies powerhead on it, then i would just get the new powerhead, if they are going to put on another Johnson, then i would defenitly get a different baot witha yamaha or mercury. They are both durable, good motors
gamblerOH
If your johnson is one of the ficht then I would replace it with something else. The earlier fichts had a lot of problems, Thye have it corrected so if a newer powerhead will fit I would take them up on their offer to put on a new powerhead since you will get a warranty with a new one.If you buy anothe rboat most likely the powerhead will not be new so you may be up against the same thing soon after getting it home. Remember, they all break down.
DDbasser
Well, I went ahead and traded the javelin. I bought a 2001 Triton Tr-186. It has a newer 150 Johnson on it. They gave me a warranty on this boat as well. My dad and grandfather both had johnson motors and never had any trouble with them. The last boat I bought was an 18ft alumaweld with a 40 hp merc and I never had any trouble with it. The place I bought this boat from has all the service records on this Triton so I'm gonna give it a shot. If I do have problems with this one then the next one will be a merc. fishinfool
I've had a Yamaha on my boat for about a year now and have not had one single problem with it except for flooding the engine, which was 100% my fault. It cranks on a dime and is real easy to tune. I'm getting ready to buy another bass boat that has an 85 Mariner on it. If i'm correct, Mariner is Mercury's "off" brand right? The guy is selling this boat for nothing close to its true value, he just needs quick cash so I jumped on the deal, i'll post pics as soon as I get a chance. DDbasser
Fishinfool, Yes mariner was made by merc, They no longer make mariners but I've been told that you can still get parts for them. I've also been told that they used merc parts in the mainers, but I don't know that for a fact. I took the Triton out this evening and it runs great. this is the smoothest riding boat I've been in.
