Left Hand Retrieve VS Right Hand Retrieve

Featured Replies

I'm as left handed as it gets, rod never leaves my left hand. reel with the right, both spinning and casting. when I first started fishing was given a spinning reel that had handle on left side and I would turn it upside-down to reel it!!!!!! cannot reel with my left hand to save my life.rod has to be in left hand period.

I'm a switcher.  RH dominant.  I too move the handle to the right side on spinning reels.  I've trained myself to the point that I can't even set a hook right with my right arm or impart proper action to a lure...(walking the dog, etc.)  but I can't cast worth a darn with my left hand.....although I am learning.  Weirdly, I can't pitch or flip with my right hand at all.  I do that with my left.  As someone else said...we're all different and whatever works for you.  I don't think I've ever lost a fish because I was changing hands.

some people are hopelessly right handed. they probably couldn't even give you the finger using their left hand :D

LMAO I know some people who are like that lol

Thank you everyone for your input! I see a lot of reason on why to use a right hand retrieve and why to use a left hand one. I guess for me growing up on spinning reels the left hand retrieve is more natural. not to mention that I feel like setting the hook and doing finesse stuff would be better suited for my dominate hand. I still want to learn how to use both because I know majority of the bait cast companies only make right hand ones :( I have already lost 2 fish on a jig because of poor hook sets from my left  hand :annoyed1: and I guess being ambidextrous would be great so I can use almost anything.

I also read somewhere that bait casters were made right handed because back in the day that's how the crappy spin cast reels were and I guess that's just how everyone thought a bait caster should be.

My left hand/arm might as well be attached to someone else, I'd have about the same amount of control over it.

I can cast, switch hands, and start my retrieve without even thinking about it. I tried a left hand retrieve baitcaster for several months, but all I did was prove that I'm not capable of learning to use a left handed baitcaster.

This. So much of this.
I have always wondered why, but as an angler with about a dozen RH reels, it's too late to change. And apparently too late to learn.

There is no "right" answer.  Only a "Right 4 you" answer.  And that's all that matters.

Same here. As a lefty, I cast with my left and crank with my right, both spinning and casting. Really just feels more natural to me. Usually as a lefty I'm cursed with sports equipment - guns, golf clubs, baseball mitts, and even with my guitars. It's nice to finally get a full selection of options for once, and not limited to just two or three models.

I'm right handed and all of my casting reels are right hand retrieve.  I like to trow right and catch left most of the time.  My confidence baits are soft plastics so I tend to make the hand switch while waiting for the bait to sink.  If I'm throwing I buzz bait of something that requires an immediate retrieve I'm perfectly capable of a mid cast switch no issues there.

I'm also comfortable casting with my left hand if overhanging branches or a crowed boat makes a right hand cast difficult.  I mean I'm right hand dominant but my left is not completely useless. I've considered buying a left hand reel to try one out but never could justify the price of a good reel just to try.  I'm sure some day I'll find a deal on a used or discount reel that is left handed and get one but right hand works well enough for me that I haven't looked real hard for one yet.
