How old is too old??

Featured Replies

I am looking at buying a bass boat and was wondering when buying used how old is too old. The reason I ask is I have found a 1986 Ranger 375V with a 175hp Mercury. They are asking $5,900. I am new to the used bass boat world, so any help is appreciated. I have included a link with a picture of the boat.

Thanks

Here is the description of the boat.

Dual console bass boat with 56# thrust OMC trolling motor, Lowrance 1240A flasher in dash and in the bow panel, Garmin 160 at the bow, bike seat and pro pole, bench seat, stainless steel prop custom single axle trailer with spare wheel and tire.

That's a tough one.  Age has a lot to do with it but how well it has been maintained, where it has been kept and what shape the transome is in.  They are asking a premium price for a boat that age.  Go to NADA and see what they say the value is.  I've seen 20 year old boats in better shape than five year old ones.

It really needs to be check out good by someone that knows their stuff

Compression test, leak down test, spark test, on the water test, and I probably have missed one or two, but if the boat is in good condition and the motor and interior also offer him $4,500, reason being is you can find a boat in the '90s for that price and you can even come across a ranger for that. The boat looks like it is in good condition but you are buying a 19year old boat. Just my .02

That boat I would say has a wood transom and wood stringers be careful I have a friend that bought a 1980'S Bass boat and to replace the transom who knows what decay is under the decking.

It Looks OK, But as other people said, look out for a wood transom and rotting. Also test all their is to be tested and offer him $4000 or less if you are going to buy it. Even in washington, you can get a early 90's Skeeter or Ranger for $5500
