Beginner fly tying

Recommended Posts

I caught the fly fishing bug and decided to add fly tying to my lead pouring and lure painting hobbies. I started out with the most basic fly I could think of...the foam body spider.  Made one with short rubber legs,  one with long, and then decided to get a little creative.

I like how the third one turned out. I used fluro for the legs so it sinks to the body.  I crumpled it in my hand and it bounces right back.  My wife tried to smash it so I think it looks real enough.  Going to see what the fish think on Sunday.  Will add more flies (if they are presentable).

Pretty neat if it will rest on top of the water's film (surface tension).  I fear, however, that it might try to sit upside down.  Let me know how it works out!

It sinks to the body right side up.  I thought it would look cool if it sat on top but I tossed it in a sink of water and it landed right side up and sank to the body every time. I did use flurocarbon for the legs so I expected them to sink. It wouldn't be the end of the world if it went in upside down though

Looks "cricketesque" to me.  The great thing about flies (and many other lures) is that they usually only have to give the impression of something to work.  Scratch that!  They usually only have to look like something EDIBLE for it to work.

I wonder what would happen if you used some thicker mono for those legs instead. Spider/Waterstrider look seems like it would be deadly.

The plan for the next is mono legs.  The spider legs were't holding the black marker well.  It looks good on the water though.  The legs spread out nicely

Hi Jon,

Where can I buy liquid silicon?  Does it go by a particular trade name, or is liquid silicon enough?

Thanks again for the great tip.  I'm really eager to give it a try.

Cheers,

Bob H
