Flotation Foam

Featured Replies

i had been looking around for some foam to place under the floors that i am adding to my Boat. i stumbled across an Orschelns Farm store here in Mid Mo. out in the Parking lot they just recieved a shipment of Small trailers, 5x8 4x6, you know utility trailers. they were stacked on top of each other with no wheels on them.

they were stacked on Perfect 18"x 10' Foam blocks wrapped in plastic wrap.

i asked and they let me take all i wanted. i think this stuff will be perfect, using a hot saw to slice them and place them on my boat floor.

Just thought id let you all know, if you have a farm store or somewhere where they sell trailers..they may have a ton of this stuff and be throwing it away.

Will this actually make the boat sit higher, or is it more of a saftey feature?

well in my case i removed the Middle seat, and the front seat. all 3 bench seats had foam under them. i will use the foam removed from them and the stuff i got under the floor.

it will serve 2 fold, 1 is Safety and 2 Sound dampening. dropping things on the floor wont echo. i am also going to add more foam "ABOVE" than was there, by placing it under the front deck i added.

im just going to slice it and use "Great Stuff" to help it stick in place.

Should be neat.

Adding foam to a boat will NOT make it have more freeboard, alothough it will dampen sound and help keep the boat afloat even after it is filled with water.

Mo, the stuff won't absorb any water will it? Just wouldn't want the whole deal adding weight if it did.

No, actually, we just had rain and snow here, and it was outside.. still light as a feather. i think it'll work just fine.

I'm not exactly Bob Vila or Norm Abrams. What is a hot saw? Or what does that mean? The sound dampening is a good idea.Free is a price everyone can afford. :D

"HOT SAW" =  a Saw blade with many teeth thats heated up with a little propane torch.

it just makes it easier to to cut through the Stryofoam, Plus it wont allow it to fall apart. know what i mean?

A friend of mine and myself also used the sheet's of Styrofoam under our decking, his cut's were made with a serrated knife and he had minor problems with the edges not being smooth and little pieces of the insulation coming off. Just a agervation was all it was, so when I did mine I used an electric carving knife and took a shop towel with a little lacquer thinner on it and rubbed the cut edges, that kinda melted the styrofoam and sealed it. No mess in the bottom of the boat.
