Looking for my 1st Jon Boat?

Featured Replies

I'm in the market for a Jon Boat, something small, simple, and cheap.  Basically just going to be used at my local lake and other surrounding small bodies of water.  I'm getting one WITHOUT a gas motor, as it's not needed, nor permitted on most of the local lakes.

My question is, this will be my first boat EVER! lol  I'm sure there's alot of stuff like registration, etc. etc.  I was just curious if someone could give me a small break down on what I need to do to make everything "legal" and possible some "must have" things as far as the boat goes (this will be a boat + trailer)

I live in PA and mainly looking for 12ft-14ft jon boat, nothing big or fancy.  Something I can crash into rocks while chasing bass! lol (j/k)

I found a 14ft Aluma-Craft that comes with a trailor, doesn't sound like it has much else to it (trolling motor etc).  Here's a copy of the add, just curious how it sounds:

"ALUMA-CRAFT: 14 FT. SEMI V with TeeNee trailer. Real nice shape. $375."

Remember just because it has an electric motor it is still a motor boat and must be registerd and all other things pertaining to a motor boat must be followed. Pennsylvania as some over zealous fish and boat wardens.

this should help with the trailer

What part of PA are you in? I'm looking for a boat like that if you don't buy it.

I have a small Jon boat that was under my brother in-laws garage for years. I took it and use without a trailer and just throw it on my roof racks. However, it was old and didn't have a hull number and I couldn't read the serial number. I don't think it cost extra, but I had to get a title for it and make a plate with the hull number that Pennsylvania supplied and rivet it to the boat. I did have to sign a bunch of papers saying that the boat wasn't stolen and that there was no chain of possesion with receipts available. So make sure you get the proper receipts and titles.

Other than that Team_Dougherty supplied all the info you need.

T_D, thanks. I was out today looking at boats at Green Lane to see if anybody had one for sale. My wife picked up the Sunday paper from where she works and was going to look through that later too. I never even tried craigslist. I thought that was an online dating thing.

I have some money leftover from the new car I bought my wife and if I don't get on the ball I'll end up handing it all to the bait monkey!! I bid on a Hi Speed reel on ebay and then found a better deal. I was hoping I'd get outbid on the other, but it looks like I may end up with 2 of them.

Minuteman,

There is a boat for sale three or four spaces down from my boat at green lane in the trailer section. It is all under covers so I could not tell what it was. The boat for sale is in spot 140 something.
