Hydrofoil Stabilizer

Featured Replies

Just curious to see what people think about these. I don't currently have one but am thinking about buying one and seeing what people have to say about them. Bass Pro has the Sting Ray Speed-XP Stablizer for $54.99. Is it worth the money?

My boat leans to the left a little bit after I get on plane (and I'm pretty sure there is more weight on the right). It will level out if I trim it up some (but I also am having problems with it bouncing when I trim it up). Will the stabilizer help with any of this?

Thanks

Mid-MO,

I use a doel-fin on my boat. I have used it with and without. With the dole-fin the hole shot is much better, it gets on plane faster and stays on plane at a slower speed. But it does knock a couple of MPH off of the top end. My boat has a live well on the left side and when it is filled with water the boat will lean that way when running with and without the dole-fin, unless I have my son sit on the right side. Why would anyone but a livewell on the side of the boat anyway?

If I have three people on board someone has to sit up front and then the doel-fin does not make a difference. Becasue my boat is a tiller style, The doel-fin makes the biggest difference when I am by myself.

I would check out the SE Sport 300 or 200, depending on the size of your motor.  Depending on you setup, engine height etc, it should not slow you down on top end.  I run the SE 300 on my hotrod motor and boat has no problems running 80 mph with it.  It does make big difference in hole shot but if the motor is up where it should be, probably will not help porposing or the lean your talking about.  When the motor is up and the prop is not buried 6 - 8" deep on plane, the SE Sports should be running just above the water's surface so it's not doing a whole lot at full speed.

Stabalizers will do more for the lean and porposing than hydrofoils will.  The do cost more but will come closer to what you're looking for.  That's those things you see that look like flaps that mount on the rear of the boat.  They will also dang near launch a boat on plane if you fish a lot of shallow water and have to get on plane quickly without bow lift and having the transome dig in.

What is your boat?   I run a Doel Fin and it does just what Dougherty says.  As far as lean. Could be simple weight distribution.  Bouncing - porpoising - you might be trimmed up too high.  The fin isn't gonna help there.  Get someone experienced to ride along and check your rooster tail - a high one above the motor housing you might have the motor too high or trimmed too high.  Should be able to hear the sound change as the prop comes near the surface of the water. Take a look around on some other forums; Ken Cook is especially knowledgeable about boat set-up.  Learned a lot from him

I've got a 95 Nitro with a 75 HP Mercury on it.  I really don't think the weight is out of balance (battery on each side, myself and a passenger - roughly equal weight, livewell in the middle, rods on one side and tackle on the other).

I did adjust the trim tab on the engine - it didn't look quite square with the motor to me.  It was starting to bounce a little and I only had it trimmed between 1/4 and a 1/2 on the guage - but I didn't have it a full throttle either.
