Upgrading electronics in my new boat

Featured Replies

I just purchased a used 2011 Tracker Pro Team 175 TXW. I'm considering upgrading  the two Lowrance fish-finders to new units. I'm looking at the Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 53 CV.  I like the map features of this unit. I'm thinking about putting one at the console and one forward by the trolling motor. I understand that both transducers will need to be mounted on the transom because of the side view feature. I'm fairly tech savvy, but I'll admit to being in unfamiliar waters here (pun intended). Any advice, opinions or possible pitfalls in doing this would be appreciated.

Maybe not. I use/have used Humminbird Side Imaging transducers on my trolling motor. Works great.

You may want to fully investigate exactly what technologies that model has.

CV (meaning ClearVu) is the renamed DownVu

SideVu  (SV) is still a used product name.

Nothing wrong with putting a side scan transducer on your TM.  Mine works fine.  Just need to understand that the image will shift when turning the TM, though.  Easy to get used to.  But there are a couple of companies that offer transducer mounts that you can use up front that will keep the transducer stationary.

I would be sure to put one of the transducers on the trolling motor.  Your ClearVu (down) will work great and the SideVu will be OK.  With Sidevu it does work better moving.  High speed on trolling motor should give excellent quality.  Slower or while turning will distort the view.  I like to use ClearVu and standard sonar on a split screen under the trolling motor.  It really tells you what's down there.  Great units that are so easy to use and the quick connect/disconnect is great for traveling or if you have to leave your boat in an unsecured place.

So, maybe I'll put a 53 CV by the console and the larger 73 SV up front by the trolling motor.
