who hauls their boat in a pickup truck?

Featured Replies

I use a 14' old town canoe.  It weighs 64 lbs and easily slides in the back of my toyota Tacoma.

who else uses their pickup to transport a boat, canoe, or kyak?

What are the dimensions etc.

I used to transport my two-man boat (11 ft x 5.5 ft) in a ....... well lets here ...... first a '91 Ford Ranger, then a '98 chevy s-10, then an '01 s-10, and lastly a '03 Dodge Ram.  The Ram was the only truck that the boat would lay flat.  For the Ranger we built a removable platform out of plywood (to get above the wheel weels in the bed) and the boat laid flat on that.  Plus you could put stuff underneath.  While this sounds OK, it was a pain in the butt to get the boat in the truck by yourself.  In the s-10's we just tilted the boat so one side of the boat rested on the bottom of the bed and one on the side of the truck.  This was a lot easier.

Two years ago though we found a cheap utility trailer and it has made things so much easier and quicker when loading and un-loading the boat.

Several years ago I had a canoe and then a 10' jon boat (Grumman, solid lil' bhote). Neither had a trailer, I loaded them up in the back of my pickup. I think I still had the 88 F150 with the canoe but then got a 94 Ranger. The jon boat was actually easier because it didn't stick out so far. It was still a 2 man gig throwing it in the truck, but we didn't have to empty everything out of it in order to load it. Just the cooler and trolling battery came out for loading.
