what is it, really?

Featured Replies

I was looking at this boat in my auto trader mag. It is a good looking 1987 bayliner bass striker. The pic is kind of hard to tell what style boat it is, weather it is a bass, ski, or whatever. Have you heared of these boats? The guy that owns it will be gone until next week.

The Bayliner Bass Striker is a bass boat. It is by no means a top of the line boat. It  was Bayliners way of having their foot in the door with a fairly decent cheap entry level bass rig. There are few bells and whistles that came stock. My fathers old boat did not even come with tilt and trim. There was alot of wood used during construction. Some of the flooring was even wood with out any fiberglass or epoxy resin coating.

The HP restrictions are fairly low due to hull design and composistion. The 17 footers were only rated for 135 HP. The boat itself is actually very light. Most also came with a Force engine. With a 85HP on my fathers old Bass Striker it would run around 40mph.

Come out and give me your honest opinion, should i just forget about it, it sounds kin of iffy to me.

My dad fished out of his for 12 years.  It served it's purpose while he had it. (Even fished a few t/x out of it, and some big waters like Santee Cooper)I was just stating that the Bass Striker is not a top of the line boat. As with any used boat weigh the good and bad before purchasing any thing. It is after all 19 years old.

As ernel stated. Bayliner has been an entry level boat builder for years.  Entry level normally means without the bells and whistles and.... unfortunately, often shortcuts in the production process.  Most of those B-liner bassboats came with Force outboards. Force used to be Chrysler, was bought out, both B-liner and Force were bought out by the Brunswick corporation (Mercury/Mariner) the Force outboard name was carried for a few more years and finally dropped.  Those motors were also entry level. Low tech, somewhat reliable but pigs and gas guzzlers.  Finding someone to work on the motor might be an issue.

I'd pass on it.  As ernel pointed out, a boat constructed of wood but improperly sealed will become a 17 or 18 foot fiberglass covered piece of rotted wood. You'll regret it.
