Ambassadeur EON SE3600

Featured Replies

Earlier I mentioned that a buddy had this reel nib. Yesterday I finally picked it up and I'm not wowed by the reel.  It appears to be plastic and the rubberized surfaces are tacky.  This particular model was made in Sweden.

My question is this...it could certainly benefit from a good cleaning and oiling.  It's been in a plastic sealed box for years and is most likely gummed.  Should I drop the cash on having it tuned and cleaned?

The last issue is I've read that most reel guys are reluctant to work on these reels because of the planatery gearing system.  If you believe it's worth salvaging, do you know of anyone that works on em?

Thanks for any input.

Most of the people on the board have never heard of that reel. The FEW that might know about that reel and can share some experience might not have come by yet. THEN, there might be a few people that DO know about that reel but want nothing more to do with it and are hiding...;)

Me, I own 20 Ambassadeur round reels and I know nothing about the Eons...

That's what I'm afraid of, @Goose52...Lol.

I had one of those lol. One of the worst reels I ever had. As far as the rubber getting sticky on the reel, mine did the same thing in its original box. Almost like it was melting. The brakes were extremely temperamental, some times it was like there was no braking and it would cast a mile, then the next cast would go nowhere. I could hold the reel and twist the whole gear side plate and handle. It was supposed to have a disengaging level wind. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn't. The planetary gears were actually a pretty simple design, but it was a nightmare opening up the reel to get to them. After I decided I was never going to use it again, I wanted to see the inside of it lol.

I traded it in at BPS during the spring classic trade in. It may end up being a great reel for you, but I personally wouldn't invest much money in it.

Thanks for the insight, @Boogey Man.  I've got plenty of decent reels so this may have to play third string...Lol.

Then they came out with this one. It was the Eon EXL 3600. I bought it too. Shortly after that, I quit buying Abu's???

I will say that there were some people that loved the EON series.  Check out the bass fishing homepage that used to be at another site.org.  There used to be a lot of info on there when people did post often.  If that doesn't work just google bass fishing home page rods/reels.  I never used one but why not try it out and see if you have good luck with it.

I had and fished an eon 5600 back in 2000 & 2001, I fished for stripers and hybrids below the dam on Toledo with that reel and other abu(5500/6500). I remember the reel having the longest freespool of any reel I have ever seen. It also cast great too, but with that said I was also using 1oz buck tails and spoons. So I can't say how well it would do with lighter stuff. Stood up to numerous 8-12 stripes though.

have all abu's, never had an eon never wanted one.there are collectors that want them for some unknown reason.

I have over 80 Ambassadeurs, but that reel will never make it in my collection lol! Stick with the Classics, you'll never go wrong. There's a reason AbuGarcia discontinued those reels they sucked!

I had one. It was a great casting reel until I took it apart. I had a guide on Lake of the Ozarks tell me he had never seen anybody throw a DD22 that far.

The side plate was soft, and had to be pried off. It was never the same after that.

If the one you have works, use it. Don't try to service it. Use it until it pukes.

Had the opportunity on one of these.  For $29 I figured whatever.  It casts really well but tends to backlash if you really zing it and I don't think there is a cast control knob on it to control the cast.  The one I have is just the Eon 3600, not the Pro or SE.
