Is my impeller working correctly?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.  I'm new to the forums.  I've really enjoyed reading the informative posts ooverthe past week or so.  You really seem to have a great group of guys here.

I have a question I hope someone will be able to help me with.  I have a 1963 Mercury 9.8 hp that I use with a 14' grumman aluminum.  I recently got the boat and it's my first boat.  When I got it, my brother said he thought the impeller was not pumping enough water, so he had a friend of his replace the impeller.  Well, I really don't see much of a difference.  The motor seems to run fine, but the water comes out the top more as a spray rather than a stream.  Is that okay?  I would think it should be a stream.  When I put my hand in the flow the water is very warm.  I just don't want the motor to overheat and I'm concerned that the guy that did the repair didn't do it right.

Thanks for any help you can can give me.

That water normally comes out from the powerhead before the thermostat so should be rather warm, easily in the 130 degree range.  Might want to use the back side of a drill bit the same size as the hole in the visual indicator and make sure it's not partially plugged.  Better still would be remove the hose from the back side of it and make sure there's nothing stopping the flow.

Thanks.  I'll take a look.  It's good to know that the water is supposed to be hot.  I figured it was, but I wasn't sure.  Thanks again for you help.
