Fish finders

Featured Replies

Last year I bought a used 1996 Ranger.  Great boat, I love it.  But over the winter I unhooked the fish finders and took them inside my house.  Now the bow mount works sporadically sometimes, and the console mount doesn't work at all.  It will power up, but no graph.  They worked fine last year.  The bow mount goes and comes, but it does work most of the time.  Does this sound like a fish finder problem or a transducer problem?  They are both Lowrance.

Thanks for any help you can give me.  Hook'em in the lip!!

First of all welcome aboard. Your electronics issues could be caused by a lot of different things. Did the fish finders work 100% when you bought the boat? Was the boat stored outside in the winter? It could be the wiring is oxidized or damaged. Have you checked the power wires? the inline fuse or holder on the positive side might be loose or oxidized, the ground wires might be loose or oxidized. Is there only one connection point on the back of the fishfinder? Some have a second connection for accessories.  If you don't have the owners manuals you should download them from the mfg's website. http://www.lowrance.com/

I will go through the manuals tonight, and I will check the wiring as best I can.  It was stored outside with a cover on it over the winter.  The bow mount actually started acting up a little at the end of last year in shallow water.  It would start climbing to outragious depth like 300 or so feet.  after a few minutes it would correct itself.  The console mount worked fine, but now it will power on but no graph.  Thanks for the tips.

Don't run the bow mount in automatic, that's what's causing the screwey depths in shallow water. The unit starts picking up harmonic echoes, making it think the waters getting deeper so it start increasing gain and that only generates more harmonics so it keeps going deeper. Use the manual mode to set the unit up and it will work much better all the way around. I absolutely never run mine in auto, they suck when run that way.

As fir the console mount, make sure all the pins and recepticals on the connector and the LCD are clean and making good connection. Make sure none have backed out of the connector and they are all in at the same dept.
