Float tubes

Featured Replies

ive been hering about these lately and i was wondering if anyone know more about them

thanks in advance

Gators love em

I've been fishing a smaller river/stream in my area and was unable to really get a good presentation under the overhanging trees from the bank.  This is a mostly slow-moving body of water, so I got this float tube:  http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=29813&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults

For fishing my river, it is perfect.  Here's my breakdown:

The good:  Reasonable mobility (got the fins with it).  Lots of room to store your gear.  Light weight.  Reasonably easy to carry over your shoulder if you have to hike a few miles (I do).  $100 with fins and the pump.

The bad:  A little rough on the a** if you go through riffles.  You pretty much have to wear the fins, so if you get to shallow water, you have to walk backwards to get through to the deeper areas (or take off your fins and risk falling over or at least dropping all your rods in the water).  It is difficult to carry 4 rods (I like to have two casting, a spinning and a fly rod).  Although these guys were supposed to be for fly fishermen, taking a 9' rod on the tube is cumbersome in the least.

I think you should evaluate the "type" of water you plan to fish - if there's lots of current and/or wind, or you need to travel great distances without the aid of current (i.e. a lake vs a stream/river), you might want to seek other conveyance.  Good luck!

Briansoupy,may i make a suggestion,pontoon boat instead of a tube.

You sit higher out of the water, most have a padded seat like a boat,

you can move around with the oars or install a trolling motor, can

be used on small lakes. What i would do is get a good sheetmetal

shop fabricate you a plate in front of the seat to place your feet

on instead of hanging them on those front pegs, take a look at em. 8-)

I agree with the pontoon boat suggestion. I have been fishing out of one for a year now and love it, still have great mobility with fins, very lightweight and very manuverable.  I have also rigged a rod holder for 4 rods and have also mounted a depth finder.  You sit up well out of the water and they are very stable and easy to transport even without a truck.  I actually strap my to the top of my car to get it to the lake.

Here is the one I have.  http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0035752318813a&navCount=1&podId=0035752&parentId=cat360011&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20431-cat360011&catalogCode=XG&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat360011&hasJS=true

Float tubes are awesome.

Much more portable than a pontoon.  I put my tube in the back of my hatch back (squished, but it fits with the seats down).

Get a "U boat" style, the round ones suck.

They are simple to maneuver with fins on.  I get many many many more hits out of a tube than my boat.  HOWEVER, setting the hook is a little unorthadox especially with a jig or tx. rigged plastic.  I'd get one, worth every penny.
