MAPI Outboard question?????

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Someone just offered to sell me a Mapi 4 stroke outboard motor.  I said what is a Mapi?  Mapi turned out to be the name brand.  Has anyone ever heard of it?  Are they any good?

Thank you,

Lonnie

I'm pretty sure it's a Chinese built Parsun motor.

The first thing you need to ask, do you have the money to throw away for it?  What kind of support is available in the USA for it, parts and technicians?  I don't care whose motor it is, it will need service at some point.  I'm sure you are not going to find many dealers that can provide service.

Not saying it's junk or a good motor, it's just no motor is any better than the parts and service available for it.  Same thing with the old Sears motors and dozen other off brand motors that have come along.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm afraid the condition of these outboards might not be as good as you described.  Just watched a You Tube video of a guy that bought a Hangkai outboard off eBay.  It looked just like the Mapi in design.  It was also made by Parsun corporation.  I think I will stick with Mercury and Johnson.

I also had a Sears Gamefisher 9.9 a few years ago.  It was a lemon!  I took it to a couple different mechanics and it could never be fixed.  I do not need that nightmare again.

I have sold many MAPI outboard motors. There reliability is comparable with the competition. Of course it's all about maintenance.
