I was given a pistol grip 6ft medium action ugly stick and a quantum bait caster today. what line would you spool this with and what kind of lures would you use with this setup?

Not enough information. How experienced are you in using baitcasters? What species are you fishing for? What kind of water are you fishing? What kind of cover are you fishing? What is the forage base - type of bait? Many, many options to choose from. I don't believe anyone can answer your question without more information.

 

Remember, lures are just tools to achieve depth & speed control. All other lure characteristics (i.e.: size & color & style) are secondary.

fishing larger farm type lakes and rivers for largemouth, smallmouth, walleye here and there. cover could be grassy areas, clear reservoirs, muddy ponds and lakes. I have never used a baitcaster before. I know pretty much what baits to use for what fish just not sure whats supposed to be used with this combo and whats not supposed to be used if it even matters.

If you're new to baitcasters pick up some 15-20 lb CHEAP monofilament to learn on. Master the art of fixing a backlash before spooling on more expensive fluorocarbon or braid. Most backlashes can be untangled so resist the urge to cut the line, but if you do end up cutting out of frustration you're only out a few cents worth of cheap mono. Walmart has huge rolls of low end mono for under $2.

Really cant beat Trilene Big Game. Over 1k yards for about 6 bucks. Add some line conditioner, and it makes learning a baitcaster not such an expensive deal. 

Back in the day when I was a bank fishing - fish keeping -bush hippie I had a similar rod & reel combo.  

When I first arrived at a pond, I would cast it out with some kind of catfish bait and stake it down real good AND leave it in free spool.   If I ever happened to catch a 4" to 6" bluegill, then I would swap out to that bait - rigged "quick strike style".   My favorite spot would be in the corner of a dam on a pond where deep water met shallow water - kinda.   I wasn't always successful doing this, it didn't work every time, however over several seasons I caught around a dozen or so channel cats between 6 and 12 pounds. 

 

That is what I'd use that rig for.  Spool it up with some cheap 17 or 20 lb mono.
