Complimentary lure to fish side by side with a shakeyhead

Featured Replies

I'm going to be fishing on a lake that has mostly produced fish almost exclusively on a shakeyhead for the last few months. I don't have anything against throwing the same bait all day and catching fish, but I started to wonder what a good companion/complimentary lure or bait would be. They've been biting trick worms in some form or green pumpkin/green (or black) flake with a chartreuse tail. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

My vote would be Drop Shot or Neg Rig.

I have to say I've been feeling small paddle tails and neko rigs as of late

You can always go with a 2-in-1 Frankenstein setup and tie a dropshot rig but instead of using a dropshot weight, tie on a shakeyhead.  I used to do this and it worked but stopped because I fish a lot of snaggy places from shore and got tired of losing a bunch of tackle every time I had a break off.  Go with a size 2 hook and nose hook a 3.5-4.5" plastic for the dropshot, and a 1/8oz or lighter shakeyhead for the bottom.

For a completely different style go with a cranking setup.  Slow finesse can get mind-numbingly boring, cranking gets you involved with constant tactile feedback.

f-ing innovative on that Frankenstein rig I'm going to do this in my early may tournament

That what I use for the past few months. I use gammy ewg #2 instead of reg dropshot hook in case of snag. I caught fish on both of them.image.thumb.jpg.14af78a7363861f33096c20f75a80368.jpg

I often have a tube tied on another rod  and alternate while while fishing a shakey head. I snap the tube and drag the shakey head.

Funny that you mention a tube, the first time I went fishing down here after moving, I caught my first fish on a white with silver flake 4" tube Texas rigged on a weighted hook. That was late Fall and I have only caught one more fish on a tube since then (about 2 weeks later). I may have to revisit it though, this time with a  weighted head rather than t-rigged. Thanks for the reminder!
